Log file truncation

Hi Gurus,

What is the need for truncating the log file. I have a log file which is of 41 GB its filling the disk. I dont have any other drive. I am taking the backup of transaction log. Do i have to truncate before shrinking or no  need of it. Can i go for shrinking the log file.
