DB backup:- after unzip (10 GB)

http://blogs.technet.com/b/wikininjas/archive/2014/09/16/the-microsoft-technet-guru-awards-august-2014.aspx

Congratulations to all our new Gurus for August 2014!

We will be interviewing some of the winners and highlighting their achievements, as the month unfolds.

Post your September contributions here:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/26444.technet-guru-contributions-for-september-2014.aspx

Read all about September's competition, hopefully in a stickied post, at the top of this forum.

Below is a summary of the medal winners for August. The last column being a few of the comments from the judges.

Unfortunately, runners up and their judge feedback comments had to be trimmed from THIS post, to fit into the forum's 60,000 character limit, however the full version is available on TechNet Wiki.

Some articles only just missed out, so we may be returning to discuss those too, in future blogs.

Today one of the interviewers asked me what is the SQL command (statement) behind Truncate statement. I wonder if there is such a command at all. From what I know Truncate just empties the data pages. Please suggest. Thanks in advance.

Our system was unavailable for 1hr yesterday. When we trace the problem, we found that the sqlserver suffered a lot of deadlocks.

However, all these deadlocks were caused by some insert statements. Here is the error log:

Hi all

I connect SQLServer2014Express localDB with SSMS,the Database engine is "(localDB)\MSSQLLocalDB",and use Windows Authentication. It Connected OK.

I create a Database "Test" and a table "AuthorityGroup" under database "Test".

I insert two records into table "AuthorityGroup" ,it looks like below:

AuthorityGroupID       AuthorityGroupCaption

        1                                操作员

        2                                 abc

AuthorityGroupID is the identity field. AuthorityGroupID datatype is int,AuthorityGroupCaption is nchar(20).

I build a query in SSMS.

select AuthorityGroupid from AuthorityGroup where AuthorityGroupCaption = 'abc'

then result is 2.

I build another query.

select AuthorityGroupid from AuthorityGroup where AuthorityGroupCaption = '操作员'

returns no result. But I think it should be 1.

I install SQLServer2014Express on the same computer, and create database "Test" and table "AuthorityGroup"

I build a query in SSMS.

select AuthorityGroupid from AuthorityGroup where AuthorityGroupCaption = 'abc'

then result is 2.   same as above.

when I run the query

select AuthorityGroupid from AuthorityGroup where AuthorityGroupCaption = '操作员'

the result is 1. It's the correct value.

I don't understand why

the result from SQLServer2014Express localDB  and SQLServer2014Express is different.

thank you for your help.

WY.

Minimum RAM available for operating system after SQL instance reservations ...

Hi,

we have a Windows 2008 R2 server with 96 GB of RAM, running SQL Server 2008 R2 on it. We have 4 instance, whose memory maximums are  (in GB) : 4, 16, 16, 32. Total : 68 GB. My question is : can I create another instance of 16 GB without putting in risk the Windows 2008 R2 server performance?

I can put the question in another more generalistic way : what is the minimum amount of RAM we should leave free (without assigning to any SQL instance) in a SQL 2008 R2 server? Keeping in mind the O.S. is Windows 2008 R2

Hope the question is clear, and that anybody could help us

Best regards,

SQL Migration 2000 to 2012 without Outage

I am working on a project which is migrating some legacy SQL Server 2000 instances to SQL Server 2012. As you read word legacy, these databases are used by some VB based desktop applications. It has around 4000+ users and application is rated GOLD (means it has to be up 24x7)

Summary again

Desktop exe Installed VB applications -> SQL Server 2000

Target State

Desktop exe Installed VB applications -> SQL Server 2012

Application use a config file that contains SQL Server details that it connects to. So once data move to new SQL Server, this config file needs to be changed with new server details.

I have been told that SQL Server 2000 can't migrate directly. It should first go to SQL Server 2008 and then SQL Server 2012. Please correct if this is not right understanding?

My problem is around Implementation Plan for this task in production. I can't move all users in one go means I would be migrating 100 users first and then few other hundreds and finally all left. Which means some users might start using SQL Server 2012 while other still working with SQL Serve 2000. The reason I don't want everything in one go because it's too risky in case of any glitch and because application has to be up 24x7 it's not possible to bring down the applications and update config files on each user's desktop.

But if I allow 2000 and 2012 running together(say 1 week until all users move), it will make these databases out of sync and I don't think they can be merged later because both databases may be having same primary keys assigned to different data.

I can't bring the application down and take 4 hours outage to allow all users move to new databases in one shot because application has to be up 24x7.

Can any one recommend any approach that generally companies take to migrate SQL Server without outage like I stated above with keeping data consistency?

Concurrent delete queries on one table

$

Hi folks,

I just recently started working with SQL server. I did my research and I guess that the post http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/7fe7499e-10a5-4371-84a4-aa1df8187a04/can-i-prevent-deadlock-during-concurrent-delete?forum=transactsql hits and somehow sovles my problem 100%.

I am glad to have my issue resolved but I am also interested in understanding what went wrong deep inside as much as learn what I might do better. My scenario:

4 processes updating disjunct entries at different intervals within the same table and issuing delete queries on that table. Sometimes (maybe once a day) that gives me a deadlock. colums: value, mainclass, subclass, timestamp with a clustered index at timestamp

(My statement is of the form "delete from table where maintype=sth  and subtype=sth and timestamp=st")

I'll append a sample deadlock graph. My main questions, which I couldn't answer so far:

1. Is this expected behaviour or should SQL Server be able to handle such requests, or to put it right do I have to care for structures that avoid the above scenario, do I have to reconfigure or is there sth else to look at?

2. Is this a configuration problem?

3. I also do not understand why the report states that the processes fought for page ids when the lock escalation type was set to table.

4. As far as I got to know until now having a clustered index on the timestamp colum is likely to boost my problem rather than solving it?

I am really looking forward to any insights you can give.

Support for triggers for tables with clustered column-store indexes

Hello,

We are very exciting about the new clustered column-store indexes in SQL 2014 and our performance tests shows significant performance gains.  However, our existing functionality relies on triggers and they are not allowed on tables with column-store indexes.  Does anybody have information as to whether allowing triggers on tables with column-store indexes is anywhere on the radar?

Thank you!

P.S.  We spent a lot of time considering various work-around to avoid triggers, but the amount of work we would have to do is simply overwhelming, so we are considering delaying our upgrade until such functionality hopefully becomes available.

tempdb adding data files - multiple instances

Just curious as how does the recommendation works for multiple instances of SQL on one box.

How many data files you would add per instance for tempdb if there are multiple instances? Would the limit be 8 (the up to 8 if you have more than 8 cores) divided across the instances or 8 per instance.

(I know the best practise recommendation of adding tempdb data files is not necessarily great for all scenarios)

Thank you

Paula

can anyone please explain me the differnce of having a view replaced with a temp table.
the reason i am asking is one of our jobs takes 4 hours to complete using a view, if the same view is replaced by a table, it just takes 20 minutes. If the base tables are being modified, will the results be the same for both , ie using a view vs a temp table in place of a view..pls help..thnks in advnace.
